Supercomputer rubbishes Arsenal’s title chances ARSENAL NEWS LATEST NEWS

 Supercomputer rubbishes Arsenal’s title chance

Arsenal has made some serious progress this season and has topped the Premier League table for a long time.

They could go back top and stay there if they keep winning, but most people still do not believe they can win the Premier League title.

Mikel Arteta’s side has been in fine form for most of this campaign, but their recent results will make doubts creep into the minds of their fans and players

They remain a team with the potential of doing great this season, but a supercomputer has rubbished their chance of winning the league title.

FiveThirtyEight’s supercomputer tips Manchester City to retain the league title and gives them a 76% chance of winning it.

Arsenal has the second-best chance of winning. However, there is just a 13% likelihood of that happening.

This is so far behind City that the supercomputer clearly believes Arteta men will just make the UCL

Supercomputers do not know more than the data being inputted into them and we shouldn’t take this one seriously.

What we need to do now is to work harder and win more matches so that we can achieve our seasonal objectives by the end of the campaign.

2 more seasons before we can win the league and that depends on 5 more real quality signings. Still it’s nice to be in the hunt again anyway

My annoyance… Arsenal was not even in the top three. I laughed.

They aren’t ready for what’s coming at the end of the season.

All a so called supercomputer actually is, is the product of the basic average of bookie odds programmed into it. It has no mind of its own , unlike humans. So anyone can quite easily look up all the various bookies odds, which will not be much different from each other and bet accordingly, if they wish.

The term “supercomputer” is just a basic computer, in reality, that is used to fool certain less wordly wise fans into believing it has a sort of mind of its own.

It has not and is essentially quite meaningless and largely pointless in trying to predict outcomes. It simply gives the broad percentage chances of various outcomes. BIG DEAL!!

Revert to his preferred 4-3-3, finally drop Fabinho, start searching for a midfielder to sign in January... and stop conceding so early! What Jurgen Klopp must do to halt Liverpool's slide and keep their top-four hopes alive

Liverpool's defeat to Leeds leaves them eight points outside the top-four

Jurgen Klopp's side were just two games away from a quadruple last season

The German is struggling to rectify Liverpool's issues so far this campaign

Defeat by Leeds showed that the Reds might need to change back to a 4-3-3

Sportsmail takes a look at how Klopp can put the Reds back on the right track

Jurgen Klopp is facing arguably his greatest challenge as Liverpool manager, with the Reds hitting a new low in their shocking 2-1 defeat by Leeds at Anfield.

Five months ago, they were just two matches away from winning an iconic quadruple, now they are five points away from the relegation zone after a start to the season where everything appears to be going wrong.

Liverpool have changed to a 4-4-2 this month but the formation change hasn't worked

What was clear against Leeds was that there was a lack of control and the two starting midfielders - Fabinho and Thiago - were continually bypassed by the energetic players Leeds had against them.

The system also doesn't benefit Liverpool's full-backs. Andrew Robertson did well to provide width and was one of their biggest threats, but he and Trent Alexander-Arnold regularly received the ball with no help out wide and would often have to play back to Virgil van Dijk or Joe Gomez.

With younger, more energetic players in the centre of the park, Liverpool could make it work

But with Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson playing at their current levels, Liverpool will struggle to make the system work against teams with younger, more energetic players.

Fabinho and Thiago struggled to contend with Leeds' energetic midfielders at the weekend

Drop Fabinho and Joe Gomez

You could go through the Liverpool squad and say that the majority of them are not playing to their usual standards.

But in recent matches, perhaps the most obvious weak links have been Joe Gomez and Fabinho.

Fabinho, has been one of Liverpool's most reliable players since he joined the club, but this season he has been the shadow of the player that was the crucial cog in the midfield to help Liverpool win the biggest trophies in football.

In the first-half against Leeds, Klopp vented his rage at Fabinho, who was clearly unimpressed by being the focus of his manager's attention.

It isn't the first time that Klopp has been frustrated with his Brazilian midfielder this season, and with no signs yet suggesting he will return to his previous best, perhaps it's time to drop the 29-year-old.

The normally reliable Fabinho has been performing well below his usual standards this season

Thiago struggled at the weekend but most of Liverpool's more impressive displays this season have been when he's been in the team and he should be the first name picked for their midfield.

Alongside him, even though he too has been off-form this season, the Reds should bring in captain Jordan Henderson.

Though his performances have also been underwhelming, there's no questioning his leadership and experience and what the Reds need more than anything is better organisation and control - something Henderson could help them towards more than Fabinho.

If Klopp does change to a 4-3-3, instead of playing Fabinho as the third man, then one of the youngsters including Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho should come in - all of which can offer the Reds a creative output to get the ball towards their forward players.

Joe Gomez gave away a penalty against West Ham and made a huge mistake against Leeds

Though Gomez impressed against Manchester City, since then he has struggled massively.

He was lucky West Ham didn't capitalise on the penalty he gave away for bundling over Jarrod Bowen, was given a hard-time against Nottingham Forest, and it was his poor back-pass that led to Leeds scoring inside four minutes.

Gomez also struggled massively in the 4-1 defeat to tomorrow's opponents Napoli, and was at fault for the second and third goals in Italy.

Ibrahima Konate is back from injury and he should be played alongside Virgil van Dijk against Napoli on Tuesday.

The Reds will be boosted by the return of defender Ibrahima Konate from injury

Sort out their club doctor situation

It's crazy to think but the Reds have been without a full-time club doctor since Jim Moxon left the club in August.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Head of Academy Medical, Bevin McCartan, and club physician Sarah Lindsay have temporarily assumed the primary medical duties with the first team this season and have been travelling to matches.

Andreas Schlumberger, head of recovery and performance, has also taken on extra responsibilities to help out.

Extra attention has been brought onto the fact that Liverpool are without a full-time doctor, due to the injuries currently affecting the senior squad.

Darwin Nunez became the 19th different Liverpool player to miss at least one game this season through a fitness concern in the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Diogo Jota, Konate, Andy Robertson, Thiago, Naby Keita, Luis Diaz, Arthur Melo, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Caoimhin Kelleher and Calvin Ramsay have all been sidelined for at least a month this season.

The number of injuries racking up but will be a serious worry for Klopp, and the Reds will be keen to have a full-time club doctor appointed to see if that helps reduce the amount of players visiting the treatment room.

The Reds have been without a permanent club doctor since Jim Moxon left back in August

Stop conceding so early!

If there's anything he needs to do more than anything on this list, it's arguably to sort out the amount of times they concede the first goal in matches.

It's a fact that's being played like a broken record, but it's something Liverpool can't seem to get out of their system.

The issue started at the end of last season and in seven of their 12 Premier League games this season they have conceded the first goal.

Only in one of those games, against Newcastle, did they come back and win - while in the other five games they've not conceded at all, winning four and drawing 0-0 with Everton.

Liverpool regularly concede the first goal in matches and Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli netted the quickest against the Reds this season inside the first minute at the EmiratesLiverpool would be in the bottom three if only the first-half of games counted in matches

Another telling statistic is that if games finished at half-time Liverpool would sit inside the relegation zone, with only Leeds and West Ham behind them but level on ten points.

On the other hand if only the second-half of matches counted, then Liverpool would be inside the top four with 22 points and just four off leaders Manchester City.

The mistake from Joe Gomez which allowed Rodrigo to score after four minutes on Saturday, typified how casual at times Liverpool have been defensively this season.

If they are to rectify this issue, then it will be no surprise to see the Reds climb the table.

Arsenal's next four fixtures compared to Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League following their impressive 5-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday

Arsenal returned to winning ways with an emphatic 5-0 win against Nottingham Forest on Sunday as Reiss Nelson impressed off the bench.

Bukayo Saka's first-half injury has left the Gunners and England sweating over his fitness with the World Cup just weeks away. The 21-year-old took a heavy kick to his ankle early in the match and was unable to continue after twice receiving treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Nelson.

The 22-year-old took his chance to make an impact as he scored twice and registered one assist, taking the game away from Forest. Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard sealed the win with two brilliant goals after Gabriel Martinelli scored an early opener to begin proceedings. Arsenal paid tribute to loanee defender Pablo Mari, who is spending the season with AC Monza in Italy after he was the victim of a stabbing attack in Milan along with five others last week.

So, with some tough tests on the horizon for Mikel Arteta's side before the Premier League pauses for a month, compares the north Londoners' next five games with their rivals Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City.

FC Zurich (H) - November 3

Mikel Arteta can afford to rotate his team ahead of a huge London derby against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for the final Europa League group stage clash against FC Zurich. Arsenal are in pole position to qualify as group winners after securing their spot in the knockout rounds after four matches.

The Gunners beat Zurich 2-1 in their first group match with goals from Marquinhos and Eddie Nketiah, with both players expected to play a role in the clash on Thursday night. Arteta will be hoping his team can end the group stages on top with a good performance that will give them confidence ahead of the game against Chelsea.

Chelsea (A) - November 6

The Blues have been revitalised since Graham Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, but they come into the London derby against Arsenal off the back of a 4-1 defeat against Potter's former side Brighton. The Gunners picked up a sensational 4-2 win in the same fixture last term and will look to repeat that result at the weekend as they try and stay ahead of Manchester City.

Brighton (H) - November 9

Arsenal have been handed a tricky Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton, who have picked up good results against Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea so far this season. Leandro Trossard is in stunning form for the Seagulls, and he is by far the main threat for the Gunners, who will be looking to go far in the domestic cup competition after reaching the semi-finals last season.

Arsenal failed to beat Brighton in both Premier League fixtures last term, with the Seagulls beating the Gunners 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

Wolves (A) - November 12

Arsenal and Wolves have had somewhat of a rivalry in the last year, with two of the last three meetings seeing Arteta's side receive a red card. The Gunners did the double over the Midlands outfit last season, winning 1-0 at Molineux despite Martinelli's sending-off and coming from behind to win 2-1 late on at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal will hope to head into the World Cup break with a win in what is expected to be a fiery affair against Wolves.

Tottenham's next four fixtures:

Marseille (A) - November 1

Liverpool (H) - November 6

Nottingham Forest (A) - November 9

Leeds (H) - November 12

Chelsea's next four fixtures:

Dinamo Zagreb (H) - November 2

Arsenal (H) - November 6

Man City (A) - November 9

Newcastle (A) - November 12

Manchester City's next four fixtures:

Sevilla (H) - November 2

Fulham (H) - November 5

Chelsea (H) - November 9

Brentford (H) - November 12

Liverpool news and transfers LIVE - Moises Caicedo blow, Heung Min-Son claim, Leeds United reaction

Liverpool transfer news, rumours, gossip and speculation including updates on Moises Caicedo, Federico Valverde, Heung Min-Son, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Frenkie de Jong, plus reaction to yesterday's defeat to Leeds United

Newcastle to rival Liverpool for midfield 'target'

Newcastle United will rival Liverpool for the signature of Brighton and Hove Albion midfield Moises Caicedo, according to reports.

Caicedo had been one of the Seagulls' star performers under former manager Graham Potter since making the move to the Amex for his native country in 2021. And such displays have led to the midfielder being linked with eye-watering moves to Anfield, Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge and now mega-rich Newcastle United look set to enter the race.

According to the Mirror, the south coast outfit are prepared to cash in on the Caicedo and can boast former sporting director Dan Ashworth and his previous relationships at Brighton to strike a deal

Liverpool have 'always liked' Son Heung Min

Liverpool could make a move for Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, a player they have 'always liked', according to reports.

Journalist Dean Jones believes Son could depart White Hart Lane if Antonio Conte's side fail to qualify for the Champions League this season. The South Korean international has two years remaining on his contract and recently turned 30.

Reports in recent weeks have suggesteod that the Tottenham forward could look for a fresh challenge elsewhere, having spent seven years in north London.

Weighing in on his future, Jones said: "I think if Tottenham don't make the top four this season, that's when the worry will probably start to set in, because there's no doubt there will be clubs that are interested in signing Son.

"Real Madrid are being spoken about at the moment, but outside of that, Liverpool have always liked him, Barcelona would be there and then probably PSG and Bayern Munich."

Liverpool 1-2 Leeds: Virgil van Dijk loses unbeaten PL record at Anfield

 Virgil van Dijk gestures

For the very first time, Virgil van Dijk has lost a Premier League match at Anfield while wearing a Liverpool shirt.

It’s quite remarkable that the record remained intact for as long as 70 games (around four and a half years), but Leeds United made the Dutchman finally taste defeat on Saturday evening.

Jesse Marsch’s side took the lead early on in the match through Rodrigo Moreno, the Spaniard taking advantage of a huge mix-up between Joe Gomez and Alisson Becker.

Liverpool levelled the scores at 1-1 soon after through Mohamed Salah, which is only his fourth goal in the Premier League so far this season.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side couldn’t really build on their equaliser and in the second half, Leeds kept them at bay with relative ease for the most part – aside from a few marvellous saves by Illan Meslier on Darwin Nunez.

And then in the 89th minute, the visitors moved 2-1 ahead thanks to a goal from birthday boy Crysencio Summerville, who turns 21 on Sunday.

Leeds’ attack capitalised on some more lax defending from Liverpool and when Summerville was presented with the chance gifted to him by Patrick Bamford, he duly fired the ball past a diving Alisson.

To say it was pandemonium in the away end would be something of an understatement…

Video: Summerville’s winner for Leeds vs Liverpool

LEEDS WIN AT ANFIELD 😳

Summerville with what appears to be the winner at Anfield, but how cruel can football be ?

Aww Liverpool 😥 pic.twitter.com/7rsX4hFUvB

— George Addo Jnr (@addojunr) October 29, 2022

Scenes, absolute scenes at Anfield!

Summerville whipped off his shirt in celebration and he won’t care one bit about the yellow card he received from the referee as a result of that act.

Leeds are now out of the bottom three after securing victory on Merseyside and it’s a result that may very well have saved Marsch’s job – for now at least.

Liverpool are now closer to the relegation zone than the top

For Liverpool, it’s another low point in a season that fans probably want to see end as soon as possible.

The Reds now sit on 16 points, which is only five more than Leicester City in 18th and a whopping 13 less than table-toppers Manchester City.

Perhaps the only silver lining for Liverpool is their form in the Champions League. They’ve won four on the bounce in Europe after losing 4-1 away from home against Napoli.

But in the Premier League, it’s been a different story completely and up next for Klopp’s team is a trip to Tottenham Hotspur, which certainly won’t be an easy assignment…

Although David moyes team  hasn't been at their best this season they would like to prove a hard to crack when they visit at Old Trafford.

Here we look at the Erik ten Hag formation to trash west Ham United.

Manchester United will continue to be without Anthony Martial for Sunday’s visit of West Ham in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag has stated his hope that the French striker returns before the World Cup but he remains absent with a back injury, having played only 133 minutes of football this season.

“He is making progress,” Ten Hag told reporters. “He is outside and he is working there. So, he is on the pitch, and we are waiting for his step back into team training.”

In better news for United, Donny van de Beek and Harry Maguire made their returns from injury in Thursday’s Europa League win against FC Sheriff.

“I was really happy to bring [on] Harry and Donny, to give them minutes," added the Red Devils boss. “Because we need them in the coming weeks.

Why London is leading the EV revolution

Thiago Silva showed off his defensive awareness against Salzburg, his footballing IQ is through the roof

Thiago Silva showed off his incredible defensive awareness in Chelsea's win over RB Salzburg on Tuesday.

The Blues clinched a spot in the Champions League last-16 after beating Salzburg 2-1 - thanks to goals from Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz, who curled home a stunning strike.

Despite not keeping a clean sheet, Chelsea's defenders starred at the back.

Trevoh Chalobah delivered a stellar performance alongside Silva, who produced a moment of defensive magic in the second-half.

A ball was lofted into Chelsea's box with Kepa Arrizabalaga rushing off his line.

Instead of attacking the ball, the veteran Brazilian defender placed himself behind Arrizabalaga.

The Chelsea keeper was beaten to the ball, but the 38-year-old was on hand to clean up after brilliantly anticipating the move.

Needless to say, fans online loved Silva showing off his unmatched footballing IQ.

One Twitter user wrote: "I think he is best defender of his era(2008-date). From AC Milan to PSG to Chelsea. His level has never drop. A true great."

A second tweeted: "Young defenders should really watch Thiago highlights bc he's the one they should learn from."

A third added: "I have watched this so many times... How did he predict? Baffling."

Another commented: "He defines the art of defending."

Silva has been immense for Chelsea since joining the Stamford Bridge club in 2020.

But he's out of contract in the summer, with Graham Potter claiming the decision is in his own hands.

"The decision is Thiago's," said Graham Potter, earlier this month.

"All I can do is help him enjoy his football here, and the rest is for him and the club to think about."

He added: "I've been here three or four weeks and I see his qualities. He is an incredible person and player.

"The performance levels he can reach and the amount of respect he has in the game is incredible."

Liverpool injury news: Four players set to miss Leeds United clash as key man's availability uncertain

Liverpool will be without at least four players for the visit of Leeds United on Saturday night while the availability of key midfielder Thiago is uncertain.

Diogo Jota, Arthur Melo and Luis Diaz are all ruled out until after the World Cup while manager Jurgen Klopp admitted last week that centre-back Joel Matip is unlikely to return until the “last two or three games” before the Premier League pauses for the tournament in Qatar.

It means the defender is likely to miss Saturday evening’s meeting with Leeds after picking up a calf injury in Liverpool’s defeat against Arsenal earlier this month.

Thiago was absent as Liverpool lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest last weekend due to an ear infection and missed out again as the Reds secured passage to the Champions League knockout stages with a 3-0 win over Ajax on Wednesday night. Asked before the game if Thiago would miss Saturday’s fixture against Leeds, Klopp said: "I hope not but who knows?"

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin have both returned to fitness after spending time on the sidelines while Ibrahima Konaté appears to have recovered from his injury problems after being named on the bench against Ajax.

Jordan Henderson was forced off in the Champions League meeting on Wednesday but Klopp confirmed that it was not a serious issue for the Liverpool captain. There were no other injury worries for the Reds from their win in Amsterdam.

Klopp added: “I was worried as well, when I saw the situation, because it was in front of me. I think he got knee on knee, so painful, a bruise probably, really painful. But as far as I know now, nothing else, so that should be fine.

“I didn’t have too much time to spend in the dressing room yet, but nobody came to me with any bigger problems.”

Jürgen Klopp may have just found Liverpool's midfield fix after Ajax win as next step is clear

Liverpool have enjoyed playing Ajax in recent years. Not only has it brought the Reds a multitude of goals and a plethora of impressive wins, the fixture has also often allowed Jürgen Klopp to experiment in the Champions League group stages.

Wednesday night was undoubtedly the most comfortable performance of the lot. Liverpool again lined up in what was a fairly unconventional formation from Klopp, very much diverging from the 4-3-3 that has been the norm for years at Anfield.

But it wasn't just the formation where Klopp may have gleamed a glimpse of the future in Amsterdam. It was also through the introduction of a midfielder who got his longest run-out in the Champions League to date for the club's first team.

Back in the reverse fixture between the two sides at Anfield, Stefan Bajčetić only came in for the last few minutes of the game, but still made history by becoming the youngest ever Liverpool player to debut in the Champions League.

This time around, the Spanish youth international of Serbian descent got a considerably longer amount of time on the pitch. Bajčetić

replaced Fabinho in the middle of the park for the last twenty minutes of the game, and produced a performance that showed plenty of promise.

He completed seven out of his eight passes, participated in five defensive duels (Wyscout), and even took a shot at goal while exhibiting his technical excellence and boisterous energy throughout his time on the pitch. Both sides had already settled for the result by the time he was introduced, which undoubtedly made the game slightly more lacklustre, but Bajčetić was impressive nonetheless.

DOMINIC KING: The penny is dropping with Darwin Nunez about what is expected from him at Liverpool… after miss a big chance, his goal and defensive efforts helped change Jurgen Klopp's mood and propel his team into the last-16

Liverpool cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Ajax in the Champions League

Darwin Nunez was on target for the Reds after scoring an excellent header

Display was one of his best yet in a Liverpool shirt after his move from Benfica

Jurgen Klopp looked pleased with his forward across all areas of the pitch

After a slow start it appears Nunez is now growing in confidence at Anfield

The game had long been sewn up and the bulk of the goals had been scored when Darwin Nunez made one of his most compelling contributions.

In the 56th minute, with Liverpool defending on the edge of their own penalty area, Ajax were popping the ball around, trying to work an opening, when Nunez pounced out of the shadows with an impeccably-timed interception and began to motor away.

It was the kind of thing you have seen Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane do countless times down the years, the type of play that Ian Rush made his trademark 40 years ago and Luis Suarez thrived on: they expect their forwards to do the hard yards, as well as score at Anfield.

Ajax 0-3 Liverpool: Reds in rampant form in Amsterdam as three goals in just nine minutes either side of half-time from Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott book Champions League last-16 spot

Tottenham 1-1 Sporting Lisbon: Harry Kane has 95th-minute winner RULED OUT by VAR to leave Spurs' Champions League hopes in the balance after Bentancur cancelled out Edwards opener

Atletico Madrid 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen: Yannick Carrasco misses a 98TH-MINUTE penalty in chaotic finish as BOTH teams are knocked out of the Champions League... after Callum Hudson-Odoi scored his first goal for Xabi Alonso's side

Napoli 3-0 Rangers: Giovanni Simeone nets quickfire double as Serie A leaders maintain perfect record in Champions League... as fifth defeat leaves visitors needing a miracle to reach Europa League

Nunez has had a colossal weight on his shoulders since arriving on Merseyside, every kick, every pass and every move has been the subject of great scrutiny, so this little moment felt significant, as if the penny was really dropping about what is expected from him.

To give it further context, it was greeted with a shake of the fist in appreciation from Jurgen Klopp, a manager who has always taken as much pleasure from seeing his team win a ball back as he has from seeing goals fly in.

So for the Uruguayan, it felt like another important step forward. On a night that ended comfortably - but for long periods looked as if it may end in calamity - Nunez could feel satisfied with all he accomplished. His manager, who engulfed him in a bear hug at the end of the night, certainly was.

The striker scored Liverpool's second goal of the night with a well taken header on WednesdayThe penny is dropping for Nunez at Anfield and he is now growing in confidence for the Reds

'It was a really good game,' said Klopp, of a player who has been nursing a hamstring issue. 'It was in both directions, helping defending. Darwin did really well. He played with a big heart and I liked that - a lot. Hopefully we took him off early enough.' He was substituted after he got a goal - his fourth in his last five appearances, a towering header from an Andy Robertson corner - but even if he had not registered, there was enough for him to take great confidence into the weeks and months ahead.

You can tell the 23-year-old has more belief in himself than in those scratchy opening weeks, when he was combustible and impatient, as he was able to shrug off hitting the post from six yards on the cusp of half-time when, really, he should have converted Firmino's cross.

He left the field shortly, after deep in conversation with the Brazilian and Salah, but when Nunez returned after the interval, his decisive inputs helped change Klopp's mood and propelled his team into the last 16 with a game to spare.

The striker bounced back superbly after missing a sitter in the first half (right)Nunez hugs boss Jurgen Klopp who on the touchline looked delighted with his performance

'Darwin was really angry at himself, disappointed at himself for missing that chance,' said Robertson. 'I sit next to him in the changing room. I don't know if he understood a word of what I said but I said "I'll put a cross on your head and you'll score!" so maybe I need to say that more often!'

Ajax had only themselves to blame for not putting Liverpool to the sword but, in these circumstances, those travelling from Merseyside were hardly in the position to refuse gifts and how they made the most of their reprieve.

Such a scenario never seemed possible when Napoli blew them away early in September but Liverpool have worked to turn things around. They are still not at their best - will they really get there again this season? - but at least Klopp was smiling by the end. It's been a long time coming.

Nunez responded well after his miss by scoring a header on Wednesday - graphic by The 3-0 win on the night has put Liverpool through to the last-16 of the Champions League

Nobody should ever take for granted qualifying for the knockout stages,' Klopp said.

Edu can sign Ruben Neves on half-price deal for Arsenal amid Barcelona's Premier League pursuit

Arsenal have been given a Ruben Neves price quote amid Barcelona's pursuit for the Portugal star

Ruben Neves has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

Thomas Partey has been excellent for Arsenal in the early weeks of this season and is a crucial piece of Mikel Arteta’s midfield jigsaw. This has been epitomised by the influence of the 29-year-old when he is included in the starting line-up.

Arsenal’s likelihood to win a game increases by a large margin when he is playing compared to when he is absent from kick-off. Since his arrival in 2020, he has been an automatic starter under Arteta.

However, his consistent injury issues mean Arsenal cannot entirely rely on the midfielder. It is for this reason that an alternative option that can offer a similar amount of quality is needed and this could be Edu’s thinking in the Gunners’ pursuit of Ruben Neves. And it seems that Barcelona have revealed the price it would take to secure his signature.

READ MORE:Why Arsenal should look again at Wilfried Zaha free transfer to solve Mikel Arteta's key concern

According to Spanish news outlet Sport, Barcelona’s pursuit of Neves is ‘very advanced’. His transfer could even be completed for €50million (£44million) in January.

However, according to the Sunday Express, the Gunners are hoping to move ahead of rivals in their pursuit of Wolves midfielder Neves. The Gunners are known to be admirers of the Portuguese international after being heavily linked with him last season.

So far in this campaign, Neves ranks sixth in the Premier League for the most tackles, as he taken the ball from his opponent on 34 occasions. This part of Neves’ game has certainly gone under the radar as he is more known for his on-the-ball-attributes, but it seems that the midfielder has added an extra element to his game.

And this element could be extremely useful for Arsenal, as Edu must look to sign more midfield reinforcements. Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey are two players whose place in the team are currently untouchable.

Albert Sambi Lokogna and Mohammed Elneny are the two backup players, but their levels in terms of experience and quality do not compare with the two starters.

Neves would be able to bridge the quality gap, and a deal could be easier to complete as Wolves ramped up their transfer business and the midfielder is yet to sign a new contract, with his current deal expiring at the end of the next season.

Eves’ contract is reaching a precarious stage where Wolves will have to accept losing the player for a cut-price fee or accept the fate of losing him on a free transfer. This is an opportunity that Arsenal can look to pounce on.

Recently sacked Wolves manager Bruno Lage has never hidden his admiration for the 24-year-old and even recently claimed that he could be worth up to £100million this summer. Speaking to our sister title Birmingham Live, he said: "I don't know if it's Man Utd or other teams. What I know is we have a special player here with us.

"When you have that player, the best thing to do is improve his salary and years of contract. But who knows, when you have a top player like him in that specific position, that can defend and attack, and is a top professional and a great man, the big teams are there with £100million to buy these kinds of players."

But, with the Portuguese manager no longer at the helm at Molineux, the Gunners do not have to worry about the £100million price tag, as they could sign him for less than half that figure, which Barcelona have revealed.

HT: Ajax 2-1 Liverpool

Half-time and Liverpool were in trouble at being deservedly 2-0 down, but that Kone-Doherty strike just beforethe break has given them real hope of a comeback. They only need a point to qualify for the last 16.

15:46KEY EVENT

GOAL! Liverpool pull one back!

Great work by Doak down the right and his low cross is deflected towards the line where Kone-Doherty heads it in from a yard out. 2-1 on 44 minutes. Game on?

15:45IAN DOYLE

Chance for the Reds

Liverpool finally have a chance. Chambers breaks out of centre-back into his usual left wing and crosses for Koumas to have a header saved.

15:44IAN DOYLE

More on that goal

Ajax go 2-0 ahead. Misehouy puts it in from about eight yards out after being found by the busy Sarfo. Long way back for Liverpool now. 42 minutes gone.

Cross to the far post for Ajax and what looks like a big chance for 2-0...but the flag goes up for offside.

15:37SEAN BRADBURY

Doak on the move

Doak does well to work the ball forward down the right - but Kone-Doherty can't quite spin towards goal when the cross comes in.

15:33SEAN BRADBURY

A shout from the Liverpool bench

"We're not going to get anything!"

Can't really argue with that from the Reds coaching staff.

Ref being generous with the level of aggression from Ajax so far.

15:32IAN DOYLE

Hmm...

Clark the latest Liverpool player to barely believe Ajax haven't been penalised for what looked like a foul.

15:30IAN DOYLE

Top work from Quansah

Quansah makes a great block to prevent Agougil doubling the lead.

Difficult times for the young Reds at the moment, they trail Ajax 1-0 on 28 minutes.

15:29IAN DOYLE

First booking...

Liverpool have not been happy that some Ajax tackles from behind have not resulted in yellow cards, so they have taken a dim view that Corness has become the first player in this game booked for minimal contact.

15:29SEAN BRADBURY

Better signs from Liverpool

Reds progressing the ball a bit better now. Most promising move so far breaks down as they get into the Ajax box.

15:24SEAN BRADBURY

Manchester United have been handed yet another FA charge for failing to control their players during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea, less than a week after receiving a similar punishment against Newcastle.

Casemiro's 94th minute equaliser at Stamford Bridge rescued a point for the Red Devils, who fell behind after Scott McTominay conceded a penalty for hauling down Armando Broja in the box ten minutes earlier.

The FA released the following statement on Wednesday: 'Manchester United FC has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.1 after its fixture versus Chelsea FC on Saturday 22 October 2022 in the Premier League.

'Manchester United allegedly failed to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion in the 84th minute, and the club has until Friday 28 October 2022 to provide a response.'

The Red Devils were reprimanded with a similar charge following their 0-0 stalemate against Newcastle eight days earlier.

According to the governing body, Manchester United failed to control their players in the 49th minute, when a handful of their furious stars surrounded referee Craig Pawson after he disallowed a goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Erik ten Hag and the club have until Friday to provide the governing body with their response

Defending his team on that occasion, Erik ten Hag said after the Newcastle game: 'I don't think it was too strong. It wasn't really aggressive but I don't know what's happening exactly on the pitch, I was too far away. I saw it back on the video.

'There was a touch from the Newcastle player, quite clear, and they went to the referee to ask about it.

'I want to express that we have always accepted the referee's decisions.

'Quite normal that you ask why in the moment. It was a curious incident. My view is that quickly you have to accept the ref's decision, there is VAR, you accept and move on.'

Gabriel Jesus makes Arsenal goals promise after failing to score in fifth straight match

Whenever a team is struggling to take its chances, the focus immediately falls on the striker, and for Arsenal, they really need Gabriel Jesus to start scoring again soon. He made it to five games without getting a goal, and in a game where the Gunners really needed one, the 25-year-old fell short.

Mikel Arteta struck a frustrated figure on the touchline, holding his head as his Arsenal side created chance upon chance only to fail to convert them. But it was Jesus who had a glut of great opportunities, often gifted to him by Martin Odegaard.

Speaking after the game, he was asked what was going wrong for him. Whilst he failed to come up with an answer, he made sure to promise the goals would return

“I don’t know, I really don’t know,” said the Brazilian. “If I know, I can tell you!

“But the only thing I can do is keep trying, keep fighting, keep improving. Like I said, I am here to score goals, I am here to help the team with the goals. I understand that. Of course, the goals are coming back soon.”

The mood was natural down after the game, with the players gutted. They couldn’t take advantage of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and later Tottenham, all dropping points. However, they do extend their lead over the Reds and their north London rivals.

Jesus gave some insight into the dressing room’s mood after the game. It was unsurprisingly down, but there was seemingly an understanding of where it went wrong and, importantly, how they might improve upon their mistakes in their final six games before the World Cup.

“Everyone is a little bit upset because we know we could win the game and get the three points today. I think they played good, but we were better than them.

“We give them a lot of easy balls, and then like I said, we don’t score the goals with the chances we create. Now is the time, you know everyone is going to talk about us, about our performance, I just want to say to the team to be calm.

“We are going to come back strong, play our football like we started the season, and everything is coming back to normal.”

Arsenal travel to Eindhoven with the chance to wrap up top spot in the group if they avoid defeat. This makes the final game at home to FC Zurich a dead rubber and the perfect chance to rotate heavily and rest players before playing Chelsea the following Sunday.

Last season Arsenal dropped points in streaks, whereas this season, the Gunners managed to overcome the sole loss of the season at Old Trafford and restart another winning run. The PSV game might and potentially should take a backseat when thinking about next week’s games.

Ensuring a response comes against a Nottingham Forest side at the Emirates who have just beaten Liverpool is paramount. The focus will be on Jesus and whether he can end this goal drought and make good on his promise.
