Football Transfer Rumours Man Utd could attempt ‘loan deal’ for ‘special’ £100m star at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag staring into the distance

Manchester United could look to tempt Atletico Madrid into sanctioning Joao Felix’s exit by offering an initial loan move to Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Erik ten Hag will have the opportunity to improve his Red Devils squad when the winter window opens for business next month.

Man United transfer news – Joao Felix

According to Spanish sources, Manchester United are monitoring Felix’s situation as they are looking to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the report suggests Premier League table-toppers Arsenal are leading the race for the Atletico attacker’s signature, while Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also among his suitors.

Aston Villa is another potential destination as Felix’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is pushing for a move to the Midlands to be completed after building a strong relationship with the club’s owners thanks to playing a pivotal role in Unai Emery being installed as their head coach.

Jones has previously told GIVEMESPORT that the Portugal international is ‘open’ to swapping Atletico for the Premier League and it has emerged that a January switch could be on the cards.

That is because, in an interview with TVE – via MailOnline – Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil revealed Felix wants to seal his departure and suitable offers will be considered after falling out with boss Diego Simeone.

What has Dean Jones said about Felix?

Jones believes Manchester United will have to equal the British transfer record, set when rivals Manchester City signed Jack Grealish last year, if they want to acquire Felix on a permanent basis.

But, with clubs often opting against spending big during the winter window, the journalist has refused to rule out the possibility of the Red Devils attempting to negotiate an initial loan deal.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think £100m is a fair price for him, I really do. But I’m not sure it’s a likely scenario for any Premier League club to pay that in the next month.

“It is very rare for clubs to consider that level of investment in the January market. Perhaps somebody could look to do some sort of loan deal initially, with scope to signing him long-term, if Atletico seem open to that.”

How did Felix perform at the World Cup?

Felix was a constant threat in the final third of the pitch, with WhoScored statistics showing he averaged 2.8 shots per game in Qatar, a higher figure than any of his Portugal teammates.

He found the back of the net once and registered a further two assists while at the World Cup, but he was unable to stop Fernando Santos’ side crashing out of the competition at the hands of Morocco at the quarter-final stage.

Felix headed to the tournament having been described as ‘special’ by Atletico striker Alvaro Morata and he also went on to show that he is capable of making a contribution defensively.

According to Sofascore, the 23-year-old averaged one tackle along with 0.3 interceptions and as many clearances per outing for Portugal on the sport’s biggest stage.
