Pundit 'surprised' by Harry Maguire and Man United teammate as news confirmed

Paul Robinson has admitted he is “surprised” Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire have been included in the England squad despite their faltering form for Man United.

After starting the opening two games of the season, the 29-year-old has only played 10 minutes of Premier League football since.

Shaw has been carrying a foot injury in recent weeks and has not featured for Man United since the 4-0 defeat to Brentford last month (13 August).

Despite this, both were included in Gareth Southgate’s 28-man squad for England’s upcoming Nations League games with Italy and Germany.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News after the squad announcement on Thursday (15 September), Southgate admitted it was “not ideal” that neither were currently regulars for the club.
Asked whether the pair had been selected so they could get some game time, Robinson told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs: “I don’t think he feels like he has to give players minutes on the pitch.

“I’m surprised by both of their inclusions. Maguire’s not been good enough and not be in the team. That’s a loyalty selection because I think in the past he has been good enough.

“If his situation continues between now and November the manager might have a different view on things.

“I’m surprised by both of their inclusions. I don’t think the manager picks players to give them minutes on the pitch, I really don’t.”
