Liverpool‘s poor start to the season lurched to an alarming new low as they were thrashed by Napoli in the Champions League.
The Italians ran riot in Naples as they put last season’s finalists to the sword in a blistering first half.
In fact, by the time the half-time whistle rang out, the game was all but done with Napoli netting three times.
While we don’t want to take anything away from the Napoli performance, Liverpool’s apologetic defensive performance in that first 45 minutes has to blamed for the humbling defeat.
They simply were not at the races in the slightest, and footage of their body language as Napoli rattled in a second goal has left fans seriously concerned.
However, one player in particular who has been singled out for his individual performance is Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander-Arnold has looked a shadow of the player he was last season with his defensive frailties already being ruthlessly exploited in this campaign.
He has, at times, looked lost out on the right flank and Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to get him firing again as Liverpool’s season threatens to derail within the first couple of months.
There is a lot of work to be done, however, as Rio Ferdinand’s analysis of one particular moment shows.
Speaking in the BT Sport studio in the aftermath of the Napoli thrashing, Ferdinand picked out one moment that showed just how off the pace Alexander-Arnold was last night.
