Liverpool set to make millions on signing who cost them just £90,000

Ki-Jana Hoever spent time in the youth ranks of Ajax and quickly attracted interest from a plethora of leading European clubs.

Liverpool won the race and because the defender hadn't signed a professional deal, they only had to play a low compensation fee to secure his services.

But despite Jurgen Klopp branding him "confident" and "a joy to watch", as well as Hoever becoming Liverpool's fourth-youngest goalscorer, he never made the grade properly at Anfield.

The Dutchman made four appearances in total and joined Wolves for a fee of £9 million when Diogo Jota headed to Liverpool from Molineux in a £41 million switch.

He failed to establish himself at the Midlands outfit and was loaned out to PSV for this season. The 20-year-old has managed 196 minutes in the Eredivisie and if they elected to make the move permanent, Liverpool would benefit.

According to the Daily Star, the arrangement is that Wolves must pay Liverpool 15 per cent of any fee they receive that is above £9 million due to a sell-on clause inserted in the contract.

Hoever, who can play right-back or centre-back, turned out 20 times for Wolves but didn't appear to be rated all that highly by manager Bruno Lage.

In fact, Lage basically blamed the player for getting injured and slammed his work ethic.

"Injuries can happen, but this one happened because he’s not prepared,” Lage said, as per The Athletic.

“Because sometimes Ki doesn’t work in the same intensity.

“The modern world, they want everything fast and as soon as possible. They forget to continue to work hard.

“It’s not just for Ki, it’s more kids in our team who need to understand I don’t waste time who guys who don’t work hard every day to im

prove.”
