Liverpool face defining £200m transfer problem with three exits looming

Liverpool have been linked with an £86m move for Real Madrid star Federico Valverde and reports have claimed they will make a second offer next summer

Even though Liverpool waited until transfer deadline day to bring in a new midfielder, the need for reinforcements was much more obvious to other people.

Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are the two midfielders who are near-certain names on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet. The other position in that trio is then up for grabs with a host of other players.

However, some of the options at Klopp’s disposal are far from long-term. This made the argument for a new midfielder even stronger.

James Milner is out of contract at the end of the season, as are Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita. The chances of all three remaining at Liverpool for the start of next season are, you would think, unlikely, and how many of the trio will still be contracted at Anfield is uncertain.

With this in mind, a midfield overhaul of Klopp’s squad in the summer of 2023 is edging closer to becoming a certainty. How that will happen, though, is still in the realms of debate.

It was well documented that Aurelien Tchouameni was a target for the Reds. However, it was always conceded that the player would choose to leave Monaco in favour of Real Madrid, rather than a move to Anfield, as it turned out to be the case.

Jurgen Klopp faces tough decision as Liverpool hierarchy could change for first time in three years

Liverpool record holder labelled 'next Michael Owen' now finds himself in football wilderness at just 25

He would have been the first part of the midfield jigsaw that Klopp was looking to build. Now, though, a back-up plan will need to be employed.

Reports in recent days have claimed that Liverpool wanted to sign Real Madrid star Federico Valverde. Diario AS even claimed that a bid worth around £86million was rejected by the Spanish giants.

Fichajes have gone on record again saying that Liverpool will make a second offer for Valverde. Given the Uruguay international is a key player for the La Liga giants, you would think it will take a mammoth-sized bid to prize the star away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

His form this season is impressive for anyone, let alone a midfielder. With three goals in six La Liga appearances, Valverde is fast becoming one of the most prized and versatile players in Europe.

Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti sees Valverde as a key player for Madrid. “One is a leader when he sets an example and Federico is very important for us, "Ancelotti told the Spanish club's official website earlier this month.

"He’s doing very well and is still very humble. This can help you to become a terrific leader in the future. There are a lot of people who can be leaders by example and not by their words. That’s very important.”

It’s not known the validity of the report, but let’s just pretend that it’s true for a moment. If that is the case, where does this leave Liverpool’s interest in Jude Bellingham?

Anfield’s recruitment hierarchy and well known to be strong admirers of the Borussia Dortmund talent. The Bundesliga club were never going to let him leave this summer, so 2023 is the only possible time where a deal could be done.
