Erik ten Hag press conference: Ronaldo ready to start but Martial still out vs Sociedad

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has undertaken his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Real Sociedad.

United get their Europa League campaign underway tomorrow night, looking to win a first piece of silverware since 2017.

The Dutchman was asked about Anthony Martial’s fitness, and confirmed the striker is still ruled out even though his fitness is improving.

Elsewhere, he said that Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to start for the first time since the 4-0 humilation away from home against Brentford.

On Martial, he said: “Yes, he is still out.

“He is progressing but he is not ready to get back into team training or in a game.”

When asked about Ronaldo, he stated: “He started against Brentford. Not since, but yeah he is ready to start.”

When asked if Ronaldo is capable of being United’s starting centre-forward for most of the season, Ten Hag was typically blunt when he said: “Of course.”

This game looks like a good opportunity for Ronaldo to come into the team from the start once again.

United have been flying since Ronaldo was dropped to the bench, with Ten Hag preferring more energy and flexibility in the frontline.

The key is to try and get some of that with Ronaldo in the team and you can see the Portuguese superstar is frustrated that he has not scored yet this season.

That was evident against Arsenal, when some opportunities went begging and if he gets a start tomorrow night. Ronaldo will be desperate to get off the mark for the season.
