Manchester United close in on signing £42million Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid as Cristiano Ronaldo could leave before transfer window closes

 Manchester United are closing in on signing Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha for a fee of around £42million,

Cunha, a 23-year-old Brazil international, signed for the Spanish club in 2021 and has scored seven goals in 37 appearances

Cunha has been at Atletico Madrid since 2021


United had been linked with a move for Alvaro Morata but have now turned their attention to his Atletico teammate.


There is no swap deal involved with Cristiano Ronaldo.


However, Atletico are interested in the Portuguese icon, who remains eager to leave United to play in the Champions League.


Cunha is highly regarded and now looks bound for Old Trafford


 have lost their first two games under Ten Hag, at home to Brighton and away to Brentford, where they shipped four goals in the first half in a humiliating 4-0 defeat.


Cunha joined Atletico only last summer for an initial fee of around £22million.


He previously played in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin.


Cunha is a Brazil international, with seven caps to his name.


He appeared as a late substitute for Atletico in Monday’s LaLiga clash with Getafe, in which Morata scored twice in a 3-0 win for Diego Simeone’s side.


That could be his last appearance for Atletico as United move to close out a deal having advanced negotiations 


In addition to this, United manager Erik ten Hag is now understood to be willing to consider selling Ronaldo before the transfer window closes.


The Red Devils are in desperate need of reinforcements having endured a nightmare start to the Premier League season.
