Liverpool target Ruben Neves says he always talks about Thiago
Reports at the weekend noted that Liverpool are admirers of Ruben Neves, with the Reds’ scouts impressed with the Wolves captain.
Jurgen Klopp is looking to sign another midfielder before the transfer deadline. And it seems as though Neves is on the Reds’ radar.
It is hard to imagine Wolves letting the £50 million-rated Portuguese leave. He is arguably their most important player. And his departure would leave Bruno Lage’s squad with a massive void to fill, and not much time to fill it.
What would potentially help Liverpool is if Neves makes it clear that he would like to go.
There is nothing to suggest that he would take action to try and force through any kind of exit. But in an interview with The Times over the weekend, Neves admitted that he missed playing in the Champions League
He was also asked about which opponents in the Premier League he has admired. And interestingly, there was mention of one current Liverpool star in his answer.
When I played [Eden] Hazard it was unbelievable, just impossible to take the ball from him. I always speak about Thiago Alcântara who is one of the best I’ve played against. And then you have [N’Golo] Kanté. He is unbelievable. Defensively and offensively,” he told The Times.
Liverpool admirers of Neves
The problem Liverpool now face is that clubs are aware of their desire to sign a midfielder. And those good enough for the Reds are surely going to cost considerably more considering how close we are to the deadline.
With that in mind, it is hard to see Neves making the switch at this late stage.
It would certainly be a remarkable statement. And if any team has any chance of pulling it off, it is potentially Liverpool.
But the Champions League finalists will also be wary of overpaying at this point when their plan appeared to be strengthening in the middle of the park next summer.
