Barcelona reach agreement with Man United over Frenkie de Jong transfer, €85m fee

In what could be a major development in the Frenkie de Jong transfer saga, Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement with Manchester United over a sale for a fee of €85 million.

This claim comes from journalist Oriol Domenech on Onze TV3, who states that the two clubs have finally struck a deal for the transfer of the Netherlands international.

Barcelona and Manchester United have been in talks with each other for the transfer of de Jong for months now, but the two parties were yet to agree a deal due to differences in valuations.

However, Manchester United CEO Richard Arnold and director John Murtough were pictured in Barcelona on Monday, with the pair having travelled to advance the deal for de Jong amid reports that Chelsea had also entered the race for his signing.

The Manchester United officials met with Barcelona director Mateu Alemany, advisor Jordi Cruyff and vice-president Rafa Yuste at a restaurant.

However, the decision of a transfer now rests with de Jong himself, who has been reluctant to leave Barcelona. Recent reports have claimed that the 25-year-old has no intentions to join Manchester United even though he appreciates the interest from the Premier League giants.

De Jong is believed to have been disappointed by Barça’s attempts at selling him this summer. Whether that changes his stance over a transfer to Old Trafford remains to be seen.

A chance to reunite with his former AFC Ajax boss Erik ten Hag can be an appealing prospect. But the lack of Champions League football at Old Trafford is seen as a major issue by de Jong.

So, having reached an agreement with Barcelona, Man United must now convince the Dutchman to make the jump to England this summer.

And, it seems like an agreement has been struck over a total fee of €85 million, including variables. However, the report does not specify the exact amount of fixed payments and add-ons that Barça could be pocketing.
